I realize the irony of leaving this comment to express how much i concur with the sentiments of this piece and how much i loathe social media as our replacement for actually talking to each other.

You should have added the disclaimer that communication ONLY_WORKS when ALL_PARTIES are willing to allow it to work. The minute a party stops listening because <insert excuse here> it all falls apart like the tower of babel. Case in point: the communist far left d/uniparty/globalists never listening to the America first/MAGA party ever. So what we have today are the globalists on one side who have taken over pretty much everything we see, hear or read in print or online and then there are the rest of us who know that the time for words is over. This war will not be won with stern words or looks. It is a war for our very identity as a country and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. But not if we stand here bloviating about communication. We live during Revolutionary War 2.0. Learn it. Know it. Live it. Stop bloviating.

Thank you for this writing. It happened to come to me precisely at the right time, as today is Father's Day, and I am "ghosted." Three children that I raised no longer communicate with me at all. Add to that, my sister, whom I haven't heard from since Hillary lost the election (what, eight years?). How cruel indeed it is. Being seventy-two years old and a devoted family man, I was brought up in an Italian/Irish household. Loud and opinionated characters were the norm. It was more funny than bitter...all said and done, everyone got things off their chests, and things calmed down and for all the emotional energy let loose, it just passed as quickly as a summer downpour. Sun came out and that was that. It had to be this way for our family to go on. Lots and lots of communication was certainly the healing balm. It's very different now. This isn't the 1950s or the 1960s. Peace, love, and understanding, as the lyrics go? It's everything but that I'm afraid. I'm alone today. I cannot think of a harsher sentence to bear.

Thank you Sherri for sharing this. You will never know just how much I needed to read this today. “Relationships” of all manner have been casualties of the last few years, let’s not forget the FIRST relationship we must nurture is our relationship with “self”, and that relationship can never fully and truly develop without a loving relationship with The Lord himself.

Thank you so much for so eloquently laying this all out and seeing the puzzles pieces put together at how and why everything went off the rails so quickly!

One thing for sure, It certainly exposes who and why instigated all this. Communication is a huge part of healing .

You laid out the problem, beautifully. So how do we relearn the art of communication with people who are afraid and/or reluctant to communicate?

Communication is the key to change. They know this. That’s why they manipulate it. Shared knowledge, shared expectations and two way communication. Face to face communication is key.
