I remember Christianes book Womens bodies, Womens Wisdom. It seems she has changed her message of accepting our bodies and the fact we gain some weight as the aging process begins. The book has been edited and by the look at its New and improved cover she has altered her face and body.
Less than 5% of the total melatonin is produced by the pineal gland. The rest is in the mitochondria. And that's how primordial melatonin is, it was here before we existed, and along with light, is what helped to develop life as we know it. It cannot possibly cause any damage but it does the very opposite. That, and ignorance are the main reasons it is being demonised. Professor Russell J. Reiter, an 89 yr old academic with over 227,000 citations ( read that again), has been doing research on melatonin and taking over 80 mg before bed for decades. One of his recent published research partners, Doris Loh, goes in excruciating detail explaining the positive effects of melatonin on membraneless biomolecular condensates, ( liquid-liquid phase separation) which are considered the origin of most degenerative diseases within the human cell. She's not an MD so cannot advise on human dosing, but when transposed from the animal studies, the HED is around 2,000-3,000 mgs. Daily. Which is what she takes. And so does my friend, who had cancer. Never been in better health now. I would advise the curious ones to go down the rabbit hole and really try to understand how this hormone works. Sleep cycling is a very small part. It is not what we are led to believe.
Melatonin saved my life after at least 50 years of terrible sleep and resulting exhaustion and irritability. I wrote about it in detail but somehow deleted it while trying to post so decided to add the short version instead haha. Everyone is different, i read the study a few weeks ago and thought it was missing soooo much—so ignored it.
Different things help different people. The fewer pharmaceuticals the better. People try to take one little thing and run with it, rarely any nuance.
I am 80 and for 30 years have taken melatonin . over the past 10 years have taken high dose melatonin . due to studies , and feel confident that I would not be writing this post had I not started taking the 10 mg . and went up gradually to high dose , over the years , as you age you make less and less of melatonin . I had insomnia for decades .
Melatonin researcher Doris Loh advocates hundreds of milligrams of mel/day. 180 is said to protect against cancer. How the heck are we supposed to know who to believe??
Remember that melatonin is a hormone that works inversely with cortisol. I don't know this research, but I'm always wary of mega hormone doses, no matter the "reason."
Thank you for all the info. Do away with "daylight savings time" and keep our rhythm correct all year. If you need more day time, get up an hour early.
I am not a fan of melatonin at all. I did use it for awhile and it caused terrible nightmares. One thing we do need to remember any time one of these "studies" comes out though is, the pharmaceutical companies *loathe* supplements and they have been lobbying for years to try and get all supplements taken off the market and unable to get without a prescription from your "friendly" allopathic "doctor". Good luck with that. We must use common sense when taking supplements, especially anything that is herbal or hormonal (including *some* types of vit D which is also a hormone). Typically most vitamins are very safe and a person would have to literally take bottles of them in one sitting to be harmed. But when it comes to herbs and synthetic hormones we should do our research before taking. IMHO.

Thank you for highlighting that important article!
I am a Sleep Psychologist, and the number one treatment for insomnia is CBT-Insomnia. It can really help when sleep hygiene is insufficient.
I’ll take my chances. I went through my teens and 20’s on limited sleep because without melatonin, it takes me hours to fall asleep.
If my ticker goes out because of melatonin, so be it, but I’m not going to lose sleep over the inconclusive study.
Article was excellent; u fortunately, the blanket is way out of the price range of the average Joe!
I found that melatonin increases my heart arrhythmia at night so I stopped taking it.
A 5 mg dose for autism….
COVID cover story. Kids and melatonin are off the charts.
I wish they would come up with quality emf products that the average person could afford such as these blankets.

Every time the weather gets cold, millions of Turkeys die. Same logic.

Thanks for your content Dr Tenpenny

I'm 88, a prostate CA survivor, and I've never taken melatonin?? Vit D 3daily, Mg Glycinate an hour before bedtime, 8-9 hrs sleep each night
I take glycinate as well.

I rely on Dr.Reiter and Doris Loh , their research ,both on utube .

I've had many patients over the years complain of similar nightmare side effects. It's often dose-related. But agree with your assessment.
We stopped taking all meds a couple years ago, including melatonin.
We just eat the cleanest food possible, exercise, and go to bed early. We rise early. We’re in our sixties.
We plan to die naturally. Not gonna worry about it. Get god. Life is better when you walk with god.
