My dentist prescribed a fluoride toothpaste earlier this year because he said my enamel needed hardening to prevent both deterioration and staining from things like coffee,etc. He handed me the prescription tube, said it is what he uses at home and I paid for it($20) at the front desk. The low price(in Big Pharma terms) was somewhat reassuring - monetization is a precursor to harm in medicine.
This toothpaste has about 4x the amount of fluoride that my Crest toothpaste has which is well under 1%, the prescription being around 1.4% fluoride. I tried it in small amounts along with my Crest and found that my teeth enamel was noticeably harder after about 2 months of use. I have not seen the research concerning the health harms of fluoride but have heard the anecdotal statements for years. I would be interested in seeing or hearing more about the clinical evidence of the health harms of fluoride.
